The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is opening a new overpass over State Road (S.R.) 50 (Colonial Drive). The additional testing has been completed and the structure is ready to be opened to traffic. The scheduled opening date is Monday morning, Jan. 7.

Discussions are underway with the concessionaire about how and when to address the long-term serviceability of the structure. This work will ensure the department and the traveling public gets what it is paying for, during the bridge’s expected 75-year lifetime. Per the contract, the concessionaire has a 34-year maintenance agreement, beyond the construction phase of the project, and also has an interest in ensuring the long-term serviceability of the bridge pier.

The bridge is part of a new on-ramp for traffic to merge onto eastbound I-4 from Garland Avenue at Amelia Street. To access the new ramp, motorists need to be in the right lane on Garland Avenue. The bridge opening allows for other work to continue in downtown Orlando, including demolition of the old on-ramp at Amelia Street, as well as work to construct eastbound lanes for the I-4 Ultimate mainline.

Modifications to this schedule may become necessary due to weather or other unforeseen conditions. FDOT urges motorists to obey posted speed limits in construction zones, stay alert and avoid distractions.
