Kirkman Road / Grand National Drive

I-4 Ultimate has totally reconfigured the Kirkman Road interchange, making it safer and easier than ever to access nearby theme parks, restaurants, shopping, and hotels.

Two former left-hand exits — from westbound I-4 to southbound Kirkman Road, and from eastbound I-4 to northbound Kirkman Road — have been reconstructed as right-hand exits, eliminating the need for drivers to weave between lanes. Other entrance and exit ramps have been lengthened and realigned, and a new loop ramp gives southbound Kirkman Road motorists access to eastbound I-4. The project also straightened both I-4 and Kirkman Road for smoother traffic flow. Just east of the interchange, a new overpass carries Grand National Drive over I-4, giving drivers an alternative to Kirkman Road.

I-4 Ultimate improvements also include safety features for bicyclists and pedestrians, such as a new pedestrian bridge across Kirkman Road just north of Major Boulevard. The elevated crossing connects Universal Orlando, on the west side of Kirkman Road, to the hotels and other businesses on the east side.

In addition to these already completed improvements, plans for the area include direct access to and from the express lanes at Grand National Drive.

Florida’s Turnpike

Major improvements to the I-4 interchange with Florida’s Turnpike interchange have already been completed as part of I-4 Ultimate. Adding a lane to the westbound I-4 exit ramp to the Turnpike has improved traffic flow, and a new lane on the eastbound I-4 entrance ramp enables motorists to merge more smoothly onto the interstate. Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is also constructing direct connect access ramps to and from the Express Lanes in the median of I-4.

Conroy Road

Tall, tapering pylons and a welcoming “Orlando” sign make Conroy Road one of the most distinctive interchanges on the Interstate 4 (I-4) corridor. The relatively new Conroy Road bridge over I-4 was designed and built to accommodate the future expansion of the interstate, so this interchange does not need to be reconstructed as part of I-4 Ultimate. However, the bridge’s pylons were the inspiration for similar structures that appear throughout the 21-mile project.

John Young Parkway

I-4 Ultimate does not include a reconstruction of the Interstate 4 (I-4) interchange with John Young Parkway because previous construction in 2007 prepared the interchange to accommodate the I-4 Ultimate express lanes. Crews are constructing the express lanes in the center of I-4 over John Young Parkway to help keep traffic moving during peak travel times. Two new ramps — an entrance to the eastbound express lanes from eastbound I-4, and an exit from the westbound express lanes to westbound I-4 — will be constructed near the interchange.

Orange Blossom Trail

One of the biggest changes to Interstate 4 (I-4) at Orange Blossom Trail (U.S. 441/17-92) is the relocation of the westbound exit from the left side of the interstate to the right. This will reduce weaving and improve safety and traffic flow in the area. Lengthening entrance and exit ramps at the interchange will provide motorists with additional space to merge to and from the general use lanes.

Future improvements include eastbound and westbound I-4 Express Lanes entrance and exit ramps in this location.

Michigan/Kaley

I-4 Ultimate project improvements at Michigan Street and Kaley Avenue will allow the two interchanges to work together to improve travel time and reduce delays in the area. The interchanges will be combined with braided ramps, frontage roads, and free-flowing U-Turns to reduce traffic weaving in the area. Combining the interchanges also will eliminate the westbound I-4 exit ramps (Exit 81B and 81C) to Kaley Avenue and the eastbound I-4 entrance ramp from Kaley Avenue.

Kaley Avenue and Michigan Street also will be connected with a Texas U-Turn, which will allow drivers to make a U-Turn under the interstate and provide free-flowing access between the two interchanges.

Additionally, the interchange will have key safety features, such as longer and wider entrance and exit ramps to improve access to the interstate and accommodate more vehicles.

State Road 408

Drivers will soon have access to new ramps connecting State Road (S.R.) 408 and Interstate 4 (I-4), greatly increasing the ease of access at the interchange.

The current configuration of the interchange requires motorists to slow down considerably, whether they are merging into one ramp when accessing S.R. 408 from eastbound and westbound I-4 or exiting S.R. 408 to I-4.

The new I-4 Ultimate interchange configuration will feature wider and longer dedicated ramps for each movement between I-4 and S.R. 408 in order to greatly improve efficiency of movement between these two vital Central Florida arteries. The interchange will also include direct connections between the I-4 express lanes and S.R. 408.

Colonial

Improvements are underway for one of the most vital Interstate 4 (I-4) interchanges in downtown Orlando. Colonial Drive (State Road 50) will feature a single-point urban interchange (SPUI) under I-4. The new, wider interchange will allow opposing left-hand traffic movements to proceed simultaneously with a single traffic signal, allowing larger volumes of traffic to flow more safely and efficiently through the intersection. A new Texas U-turn will allow drivers going north on Garland Avenue to access southbound Hughey Avenue and the new westbound I-4 entrance ramp without having to get on Colonial Drive.

The redesigned I-4/Colonial Drive interchange will include innovative features, such as an acceleration lane on eastbound I-4 from Colonial Drive to Princeton Street, improving the capacity of the I-4 general use lanes. The entrance to eastbound I-4 now occurs on the north side of Colonial Drive as opposed to the original loop ramp that was formerly on the south side, providing improved I-4 access. In addition, a planned entrance ramp to eastbound I-4 from Garland Avenue will allow traffic to fly over the Colonial Drive interchange to access I-4 directly. Another new entrance ramp — onto westbound I-4 from Hughey Avenue — will allow easy access to the interstate.

Kennedy Boulevard

While Kennedy Boulevard will remain an overpass with no ramp connections to Interstate 4 (I-4), drivers will still notice improvements to this area as part of the I-4 Ultimate Project. Key landscape and aesthetic features will be integrated into the bridge design as a tribute to historic Eatonville — the first all-black town in the United States to incorporate, and a part of the National Register of Historic Places since Feb. 3, 1998. Drivers wishing to visit historic Kennedy Boulevard, which once served as a wagon trail, should exit at Lee Road or Maitland Boulevard.

Maitland

The I-4 Ultimate project has greatly improved traffic flow at the Maitland Boulevard (State Road 414) interchange. Additional ramp access points and eliminated traffic signals have improved flow and decreased time motorists have to spend on the road through the area. The all-new interchange includes an eastbound I-4 entrance ramp, a free-flowing westbound I-4 entrance ramp, an exit ramp to a realigned Keller Road, ramps that better tie Maitland Boulevard to Maitland Summit Boulevard, a local collector road between Maitland Summit Boulevard and Keller Road, and a Southhall Lane connection to Keller Road.

A new pedestrian bridge also will be built over I-4, south of Maitland Boulevard. The bridge will provide new access for pedestrians and bicyclists moving between the east and west sides of Maitland across I-4.

State Road 436

The Interstate 4 (I-4) interchange at State Road (S.R.) 436 is getting some of the most visible improvements of the entire I-4 Ultimate project. S.R. 436 will feature an innovative single-point urban interchange (SPUI) over I-4. The new, wider interchange will allow opposing left-hand traffic movements to proceed simultaneously with a single traffic signal, allowing larger volumes of traffic to flow more safely and efficiently through the intersection. A redesign of the intersection of S.R. 436 and Wymore Road/Douglas Avenue will provide more capacity for vehicles exiting I-4. In addition, the project will include a new exit ramp from the eastbound I-4 Express Lanes to Central Parkway and an entrance ramp from that overpass to the westbound I-4 Express Lanes.

Construction also is underway on a new tunnel beneath S.R. 436 for pedestrians and bicyclists. The tunnel will take foot and bike traffic safely off S.R. 436, further improving the flow of traffic through the area. Pedestrians and bicyclists will access the tunnel via ramped entrances and exits from Wymore Road on the south side and Douglas Avenue on the north side of S.R. 436. Central Parkway

Significant changes are coming to Central Parkway. While there is currently no access to Interstate 4 (I-4) from Central Parkway, direct access ramps are under construction, which will allow drivers to enter the westbound express lanes and exit the eastbound express lanes without getting onto the I-4 general use lanes first. This will improve ramp access at both State Road (S.R.) 434 and S.R. 436, contributing to a smoother traffic flow in the area and helping manage volume on I-4.

State Road 434

Motorists may have already noticed some of the improvements at the Interstate 4 (I-4) and State Road (S.R.) 434 interchange.

A new longer and wider westbound exit ramp to S.R. 434 is in its final configuration. The new ramp is two lanes wide and expands to four lanes at the bottom for easier access onto S.R. 434 and to alleviate backups onto the interstate during periods of high traffic volume.

A new entrance ramp to westbound I-4 from westbound S.R. 434 also is in its final configuration. Motorists can access the new loop ramp from the right lane, which eliminates a traffic signal and left turn under the I-4 overpass on S.R. 434. Additionally, an auxiliary lane on westbound I-4 will be added to make merging into traffic easier.

The nearby westbound I-4 rest area also was reconfigured to remove the mixing pattern between vehicles leaving the rest area and those exiting at S.R. 434, helping make the interchange safer and more efficient.

Other improvements include increased road capacity on S.R. 434 beneath I-4, a right turn lane from the eastbound I-4 exit ramp, and the realignment and lengthening of the westbound I-4 entrance ramp from eastbound S.R. 434. Extra greenery — with native plants that will reduce maintenance costs — and hardscaping already is being installed at this interchange to increase aesthetic appeal.

In the future, drivers will also be able to directly access the express lanes from nearby Central Parkway.

Area 3 – Ivanhoe

The Ivanhoe area, just north of downtown Orlando, is a main access point into and out of the city center. Some of the largest aesthetic improvements in the I-4 Ultimate project will take place in this area. This area also will experience some of the most extensive bridge work to account for the new wider footprint of I-4. The Lake Ivanhoe bridge will become an aesthetic gateway into downtown Orlando.

New additional turn lanes and an auxiliary lane will highlight the improvements to Par and Princeton streets. Fairbanks Avenue will be realigned for improved sight distance and safety, with an additional auxiliary lane for better traffic flow when entering and exiting the interstate. Lee Road improvements include a new left-turn lane onto eastbound I-4 to improve safety and capacity and reduce ramp delays. Aesthetic features and landscaping improvements are planned for Kennedy Boulevard in this area as well.

Future improvements will include lighting features, vertical monuments, and auxiliary lanes eastbound from Colonial Drive to Princeton Street and from Princeton Street to Fairbanks Avenue; and westbound from Maitland Boulevard to Lee Road. These new lanes, along with the planned express lanes, will increase the capacity of I-4 and improve flow into and out of the downtown area.

Area 2 – Downtown

The downtown Orlando stretch of I-4 — and its eight interchanges — is undergoing some of the most dramatic improvements in the I-4 Ultimate project, including enhancements to the vital connections to and from State Road (S.R. 408). New dedicated, free-flowing flyover ramps for each movement between I-4 and S.R. 408 will open soon to allow more efficient movement between these two vital Central Florida arteries.

Colonial Drive (State Road 50) will feature a single-point urban interchange (SPUI) under I-4 and other new features to improve the interchange’s efficiency. Combing the Michigan Street and Kaley Avenue interchanges will improve safety and travel time and reduce delays for motorists. A new right-side exit to Orange Blossom Trail will increase safety and traffic flow in that area, too.

New green spaces and lighting features will make the area more aesthetically pleasing and provide a more open feel to the areas under and around I-4. Some of the lighting features can be set to specific colors to signify events, such as purple for Orlando City soccer games or blue for the Orlando Magic.
